How to run a business when you are a new parent

How to run a business when you are a new parent

Across the UK, new parents are juggling the demands of a new-born with the realisation that their work life is going to look very different now that a child has come along. More and more new parents are rejecting traditional forms of employment and opting for an entrepreneurial lifestyle that enables them to build their business around their family.

Escalating childcare costs and the desire to be more present in their child’s life are causing many parents to reassess their careers and find ways in which to build a business on their own terms.

For many, without any previous experience, a franchise is the perfect option because it offers full support and training and the backing of a well-known brand. At Razzamataz Theatre Schools, the flexibility of the role and its child-centred approach has made it possible for parents to thrive and create the life/work balance that they need.

New babies at Razzamataz

There are many parents within the network and over the last couple of months, there has been a real baby boom and we welcomed many to the Razz Family. Congratulations to Michael, Principal of Razzamataz Barnet on the birth of Miles, Debbie, Principal of Razzamataz Carlisle and Dumfries on the birth of Noa, Zoe, Principal of Razzamataz Edinburgh on the birth of Arizona-Jane, Asha, Principal of Razzamataz South Lakes on the birth of Marley, Kate, Principal of Razzamataz Southend of the birth of Saylor and Nick and Gemma, Principals of Razzamataz Sutton Coldfield on the birth of Allegra.

“It has been wonderful to see all the new babies and photos of their parents taking them straight into Razzamataz to meet the students and their families,” says Denise Hutton-Gosney, MD and Founder of Razzamataz. “Just a week after having my second child Lewis by C-section, I was at the annual Razzamataz show and he came along too. We are such a family-friendly business that parents feel totally supported in being able to include their children in the running of their schools.”

Hear from some new parents

Marley loved watching his big brother in his first Razzamataz show last month, and we’ve loved spending some of my maternity leave attending our Razz Tiny Tots Classes. It’s reminded me of the importance of what we do. He loves it and so do I – meeting new mums and carers and seeing Marley intrigued by all the sounds and sensory elements, it’s just lovely. I’m so grateful to be part of a franchise that’s allowed me to work flexibly around my young family, it’s given me the freedom I needed and I couldn’t be more thankful to my team who continue to deliver an outstanding service to our customers every single week. Our school continues to thrive and Marley’s been welcomed by the staff, students and their families with open arms,’ Asha, Principal of Razzamataz South Lakes.

Razzamataz has been really flexible with a new-born. I can work around her schedule and I have had lots of support from Head Office with time management and training. This is so important when you have a young child,” Zoe, Principal of Razzamataz Edinburgh.

Make work-life balance a priority

Babies are very good at letting you know when enough is enough. Understanding that you want time for your family actually makes you much more efficient at work. Working in this way benefits not only you and your family but your employees who have families or other commitments as well. There is no greater motivation for implementing work-life balance than to need it yourself.

When you have a family you can make Razzamataz fit in too. I’m able to get my daughter ready for school and then go to muck out the stables, knowing that I’m not running back to a 9 to 5 job,” Michaela Crumpton, Principal of Razzamataz Bristol South and Bristol North.

Plans can and do change

Anyone with a young family will know that things are likely to change at a drop of a hat. Baby is sick or the toddler has fallen over will mean that you must be able to change plans at a moment’s notice. This ability to pivot is actually beneficial to running a business and is one of the things that we love about our franchisees.

The first year was a huge learning curve getting my head around PR and marketing, copious amounts of admin and establishing myself as a boss. But the huge advantage was that my children were still in primary school and the flexibility that Razzamataz offers meant that I could do the school run, be at assemblies or sports days and stay with them and work from home if one of them were ill,” Debbi Ledwith, Principal of Razzamataz Newbury.

Have an outlet for your creativity

Being a parent is wonderful, but it can be all-consuming, leaving little room for your imaginative output. Running a Razzamataz franchise gives people the opportunity to flex their creative muscles but with full support to ensure they don’t become overwhelmed in the process.

With the support I received from Head Office, my work now fits in around my life as a mum. Although I have had lots of changes to my life personally by getting married and becoming a parent, my business is flexible and can fit around my lifestyle,” Lauren Bill, Principal Razzamataz Weymouth.
