How to help your child thrive by five

Molly Wright’s ‘How every child can thrive by five’ TED Talk has hit thousands of views for very good reason. She offers practical advice on the importance of the first five years in children’s health and development, specifically the brain. Thanks to science, we now know how important these years are. But we must not forget the experts who can make this a reality for children and their families, thanks to their specialised teaching.

Razzamataz Theatre Schools, a network of more than 50 schools with 21 years of experience, has understood this concept for many years. Creating specific classes to aid healthy development has helped families with the top five things that Molly and science recommend:

  • Connecting
  • Talking
  • Playing
  • A healthy home
  • Community

Offering fun, interactive and imaginative classes to little ones and their adult, is the first step to help children reach their full potential. As Molly explains in her talk, it is never too early to start, in fact, the earlier and the more frequent the better with scientists calling it ‘Serve and Return’. This means to connect, talk and play with children with all these elements built in to Razzamataz’s Early Years classes for little ones and their parent or caregiver.

Find your Razzamataz class

Razz Tiny Tots are for babies to 23 months, Razz Tots for 2 to 3 years and Razz Minis for 4 to 5 years. Each of the sessions opens the doors to the world of performing arts and will include many of the activities that will strengthen imagination and empathy, teach vocabulary and attention and build memory and trust. Children are hard wired to seek out meaningful connections to help them feel calm, safe and build life-long trust. Positive relationships with grownups give children the assurance to try new things, explore and have the confidence to make mistakes.

Introducing Makaton

A new addition coming soon to the Razzamataz experience is introducing Makaton to the classes, a unique language programme. It uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate while also supporting the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.

“Razzamataz classes teach so much than to just sing, dance and act,” says MD and Founder of Razzamataz Denise Hutton-Gosney. “All of our classes focus on the most important life skills to help children develop self-confidence and resilience. Our Early Years classes have an even stronger emphasis on these core skills to help all children reach their full potential in this critical window of opportunity.”
