We don’t need another article reminding us how fast the world is changing or how AI and technology are reshaping the workforce. The reality is clear: young people must be prepared for a future workplace that may look unrecognisable to today’s adults. What we do know is that certain skills will remain invaluable. Empathy, communication, resilience, leadership, and creative problem-solving will be the qualities employers seek out in the next generation.
That’s why Razzamataz Theatre Schools are proud to support a new pilot initiative, Next Gen Coaching, launching at our Carlisle school. This programme gives students aged 13 and above the chance to gain hands-on experience, develop essential life skills, and build confidence that will serve them well for the future.
The Student Helper Programme is designed for young people who want the chance to represent Razzamataz and act as role models for younger students. Through the programme, they’ll develop practical assisting skills while gaining valuable experience in communication, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving.
To build their confidence, each student helper will receive guidance from teachers and one-to-one mentoring from a dedicated team member. This support will help them learn how to teach, inspire, and nurture the next generation of Razzamataz students.
“The hope is that the programme will open doors to future work and teaching opportunities within the industry,” says Debbie Hyslop, Principal of Razzamataz Carlisle. “We believe this can be an important stepping stone for young performers who aspire to teach or work with children, and we’re committed to creating a supportive and enriching experience for every participant.”
Every student helper will take part in thorough training, preparing them to assist in classes and handle a range of responsibilities such as supporting at events, developing teaching skills, and attending training sessions. To keep them motivated and progressing, they’ll receive regular feedback and guidance from the teaching team, along with opportunities to observe and learn from experienced Razzamataz instructors.

“We believe the benefits will be significant, extending beyond teaching experience and enhancing their own technique,” adds Debbie. “They will also develop vital leadership skills, which will not only support their personal growth but also strengthen their CVs and covering letters.”
Another key aspect of the programme will be tracking students’ progression through the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. To achieve these, they will complete a range of tasks such as identifying risks and supporting student safety, devising creative pieces, learning how to support students with additional needs, and gaining an introduction to lesson planning, among many other valuable skills.
Alongside the main theatre school for children aged 4–18, Razzamataz offers a range of additional products that not only give students exciting opportunities to grow their skills, but also help franchisees stand out in their local communities while generating additional income. Every new product, such as Next Gen Coaching, undergoes a rigorous development process and is carefully piloted in selected schools to ensure it benefits students, teachers, and franchisees before being rolled out across the nationwide network of more than 80 schools.
This is one of the key benefits of being part of a national franchise with more than 25 years of experience. At Razzamataz, we take care of all the groundwork, researching, refining, and testing every new initiative, so that franchisees can feel confident they are offering programmes that are not only tried and tested but also tailored to meet the needs of their local communities.
