The Scottish branches of Razzamataz Theatre Schools is joining just a handful of organizations offering the Arts Awards, an accredited qualification for young people aged 11 to 25, which is recognised on the UCAS Tariff.
Working to support young people throughout their performing arts training is a passion for Razzamataz, the part-time performing arts school that gained national prominence after successfully appearing on BBC’s Dragons’ Den.
As part of the theatre school’s commitment to their students, the Razzamataz schools in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Balfron and Paisley will offer the Arts Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold. At each level, young people are assessed on their planning and review skills and can explore any of the art forms including performing arts, visual arts, literature, media and multimedia.
“We are delighted to be one of the very few organizations that are offering the Arts Awards in Scotland and see this as an exciting opportunity for our students,” says Natalie James, Principal of the schools in Glasgow, Balfron and Paisley. “The Awards builds confidence, helps young people to enjoy cultural activities and prepares them for further education or employment, all massively important for older children having to compete for places at colleges and universities.”
In fact, the Level 3 Gold Arts Award has been recognized on the UCAS Tariff and upon successful completion, students will be awarded 35 Tariff points, which compares to AS Level qualification C Grade (40points), Higher Sports Leader Award (30 points) and Music Theory Examinations Grade 8 Distinction (30 points). Students applying to university who have achieved a Gold Arts Award will be able to include it on their application form.
“In the past, performing arts has often been overlooked and young people with the talent and desire to take up a career in this field would have found it very difficult to receive any national qualification,” says Lynn House, Principal of Razzamataz Edinburgh. “Razzamataz students in Scotland can get a real head start in their arts career now and we are extremely proud to be able to offer the Arts Awards as part of our curriculum. For those that struggle academically but have real passion, talent and commitment for the performing arts, this is their chance to shine.”
Launched in 2005, the Arts Award is run through a collaboration between Arts Council England and Trinity Guildhall. The award fosters creative, communication and leadership skills and helps to prepare young people for further education and employment. There are currently ten Razzamataz schools involved with the Arts Awards up and down the UK, although there are plans to include all of the schools, in which there are more than 40.
Razzamataz classes consist of three hours of dance, drama and singing and the curriculum covers the whole of the performing arts, from classic West End musical theatre to commercial street dance and hip hop.
